Restaurants & the recession

In browsing the industry publications and the main stream media, there’s an increasing amount of ink offered on how the recession is impacting restaurants. Right as the economy started to dive, some big chain restaurants such as Bennigan’s shut down almost instantly.

Given the softened economy, many have started to ease the cost of dining out with meal deals, combo offers, smaller portioned entrees with equally diminished prices or even the lure of a free appetizers or wine. In Slate today, Mike Steinberg speculates that the economic downturn may even help to bring down excessive wine markups in some restaurants.
