Fine Young Cannibals

I get a lot of random mail from being a member of the food writers section of the IACP. Offers for hot sauce samples, press releases about culinary tours and recipes cards from the Rice Federation, that sort of thing. This morning, though, I got one that genuinely caught my attention. This may not have been what I was looking for right before lunch.

“Go ahead, admit it: Cannibals are fascinating.”

It was a postcard for a new book titled Human Cuisine, an anthology of works about cannibalism edited by Ken Albala and Gary Allen. “The stories, essays, poetry and drama, (not to mention recipes) in this anthology reveal that cannibalism can also be disgusting, sometimes frightening, sometimes hysterically funny, sometimes touching, but always interesting — once you get past the gag reflex.”
They go on to say, “People like to discuss eating people — supposedly, the ultimate taboo — once someone else is kind enough to bring up the subject.” (All italics are theirs.)

I am not making this up.

I feel that it’s my duty, as chair of the IACP food writers section to order it and check it out. Amazon Prime is delivering it on Wednesday. I’ll let you know. Now I have to go make lunch…
